data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>What Is Calcific Tendinitis?<\/strong><\/h2><p><strong>Calcific tendinitis<\/strong> is a particularly painful condition characterised by the deposition of calcium salts in the tendons of the shoulder (rotator cuff). The rotator cuff is a group of four tendons that contribute to the smooth movement and function of the shoulder.<\/p><h2><strong>Why Does Calcific Tendinitis Occur?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The exact cause of the condition is not known. Calcific tendinitis occurs more frequently in women aged 30\u201360 years, as well as in individuals suffering from diabetes mellitus or hypothyroidism. In 25% of patients, calcifications may occur in both shoulders. In a large percentage of cases, the calcifications will gradually regress (be absorbed) over time.<\/p><h2><strong>What Are the Symptoms?<\/strong><\/h2><p>The most common symptoms in the acute phase are:<\/p><ul><li><p>Severe pain on the front or outer aspect of the shoulder. Dr Leonidou will take a detailed medical history and examine you. The doctor will perform an<span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"> <a href=\"https:\/\/leonidou.gr\/en\/yperhxo_myoskeletikou_systimatos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ultrasound scan<\/a><\/span> of the shoulder to assess the integrity of the tendon, the presence of fluid, as well as the size and location of the calcification. An X-ray will be required to confirm that the pain and stiffness are due to calcification and not another cause, such as shoulder osteoarthritis. In some cases, further investigation with an MRI scan may also be required.<\/p><h2><strong>Conservative Treatment for Calcific Tendinitis<\/strong><\/h2><p>The initial treatment is conservative and includes the following:<\/p><ul><li><p>Rest and activity modification<\/p><\/li><li><p>Use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs<\/p><\/li><li><p>Physiotherapy and a home exercise programme. The exercises aim to reduce pain and restore range of motion. During physiotherapy, shockwave therapy may also be used in an attempt to \u201cbreak down\u201d the calcifications.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Cortisone injection alone or in combination with other biological therapies<\/p><\/li><\/ul><h2><strong>Indications for Surgical Treatment of Calcific Tendinitis<\/strong><\/h2><ul><li><p>Failure of conservative treatment<\/p><\/li><li><p>Recurrent acute episodes of pain<\/p><\/li><li><p>When the shoulder has become \u201cfrozen\u201d and has permanent stiffness<\/p><\/li><li><p>Associated conditions, such as a <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leonidou.gr\/en\/rixi-strofikou-petalou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">shoulder tendon tear<\/a><\/span><\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-fde8b8b e-con-full e-flex e-con e-child\" data-id=\"fde8b8b\" data-element_type=\"container\" data-e-type=\"container\" data-settings=\"{&quot;background_background&quot;:&quot;classic&quot;}\">\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-5b895d5 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"5b895d5\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Surgical Treatment<\/strong><\/h2><p>If conservative treatment fails, <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/leonidou.gr\/en\/arthroscopisi_omou\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>shoulder arthroscopy<\/strong><\/a> <\/span>offers a definitive solution with excellent functional outcomes. Shoulder arthroscopy involves 3 incisions, each 4 millimetres long. Through these incisions, a camera with cold light and the necessary instruments are inserted into the shoulder. Dr Leonidou will clean the inflamed tissues and remove any excess bone that is compressing the tendon (acromioplasty). He will then identify and completely remove the calcification.
