The quadriceps tendon is a strong tendon that connects the quadriceps muscle to the patella. It is responsible for knee extension and, therefore, if it does not function properly, the patient cannot walk or straighten the knee. A complete quadriceps tendon rupture is a serious injury that requires immediate treatment with surgical repair.<\/p><h2><strong>Quadriceps Tendon Rupture \u2013 Causes<\/strong><\/h2><ol><li><p>Sports activities involving jumping or sudden, powerful knee movements \u2013 such as sprinting, basketball, and volleyball.<\/p><\/li><li><p>A fall or direct blow to the knee.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Chronic tendinitis.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Certain systemic conditions make the tendon more prone to tears. Such conditions include rheumatoid arthritis, diabetes mellitus, and kidney failure.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Medications such as corticosteroids and certain antibiotics weaken the tendon, making it easier to rupture.<\/p><\/li><\/ol>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55df270 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55df270\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Quadriceps Tendon Rupture \u2013 Symptoms<\/strong><\/h2><p>Symptoms of a quadriceps tendon rupture include:<\/p><ul><li><p>Sudden and severe knee pain<\/p><\/li><li><p>Swelling and bruising around the knee joint<\/p><\/li><li><p>Difficulty walking<\/p><\/li><li><p>A sensation that something tore during the injury<\/p><\/li><li><p>Inability to straighten the knee<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3306c7e color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3306c7e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Quadriceps Tendon Rupture \u2013 Diagnosis<\/strong><\/h2><p>A patient with a quadriceps tendon rupture requires <strong>immediate<\/strong> assessment by an Orthopaedic Surgeon. Dr Leonidou will take a detailed medical history and examine you. During the clinical examination, a palpable gap is present and the patella has moved downward.<\/p><p>The doctor will perform an <a href=\"https:\/\/leonidou.gr\/en\/yperhxo_myoskeletikou_systimatos\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">ultrasound scan<\/span><\/a> and will discuss the recommended treatment approach with you. Occasionally, further investigations such as plain X-rays or an MRI scan may be required to confirm the diagnosis and assess the severity.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-667ac64 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"667ac64\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2><strong>Quadriceps Tendon Rupture \u2013 Treatment<\/strong><\/h2><p>A quadriceps tendon rupture is almost always complete \u2013 total. Partial tears are rare and can be treated conservatively with a specialised knee brace, crutches, and physiotherapy. Treatment for a complete quadriceps tendon rupture usually involves surgery, followed by personalised rehabilitation to restore strength and range of motion of the knee.<\/p><h2><strong>Surgical Repair<\/strong><\/h2><p>Surgical treatment for a quadriceps tendon rupture involves reattaching the torn tendon to the patella. Weight-bearing is increased gradually, and initially, no weight is placed on the operated leg.
