tendon from its insertion at the elbow (on the radius). The function of the tendon is flexion and supination of the forearm.<\/p><p>This injury is usually seen in men aged 30\u201360 years when a sudden pull causes elbow extension while the biceps brachii muscle is contracting. This often occurs when lifting or carrying a heavy object.<\/p><h2>What are the causes? Is there a predisposition?<\/h2><p>Distal biceps tendon rupture is an injury that occurs more frequently in:<\/p><ul><li><p>Tendons subjected to chronic strain (manual work)<\/p><\/li><li><p>Smokers<\/p><\/li><li><p>Patients who use cortisone or anabolic steroids<\/p><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-55df270 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"55df270\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>What are the symptoms of a Distal Biceps Tendon Rupture?<\/h2><p>Patients report acute pain at the front of the elbow followed by weakness in flexion and supination. At the time of injury, a characteristic popping sound from the tendon rupture is usually reported. This is followed by bruising (ecchymosis) and swelling at the front and inner side of the elbow. Finally, a deformity of the biceps anatomy appears as the muscle retracts upwards (Popeye deformity).<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-3306c7e color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"3306c7e\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>How is the diagnosis made?<\/h2><p>A patient with a distal biceps tendon rupture requires assessment by a <strong>specialized<\/strong> Upper Limb Orthopaedic Surgeon. Mr Leonidou will take a detailed medical history and examine you. Conservative treatment is usually recommended for older individuals without high functional demands or for patients with a significant medical history who are unable to undergo surgery. Surgical repair is recommended for all other patients.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-78f3845 color-scheme-inherit text-left elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"78f3845\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-e-type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<h2>Surgical Treatment: How is the Tendon Repaired?<\/h2><p><strong>Surgical repair<\/strong> should ideally be performed as soon as possible after the tendon rupture. Over time, the tendon tends to retract upwards, which is why repair of the rupture should not be delayed. During surgery, the tendon is reattached to the anatomical site from which it was torn using sutures and a special button. The technique is <strong>minimally invasive<\/strong> and is performed through an incision of approximately 3 centimetres. There are usually no external sutures (plastic closure). Hospitalization is not required and patients return home a few hours after surgery with a simple dressing (without a cast) for 48 hours.
