What Is Arthroplasty?
Arthroplasty is a safe and practically bloodless technique that allows the definitive treatment of arthritis and the resulting pain in the hip, knee, and shoulder.
How Is Arthroplasty Performed?
Through a small incision, the worn articular surfaces are removed and replaced with artificial implants, known as prostheses. The prostheses are fully compatible with the human body.
Is Hospitalisation Required?
Most patients are discharged from the hospital less than 24 hours after surgery.
Is There Pain During Arthroplasty?
The specialised anaesthesiologist administers regional anaesthesia; therefore, there is no postoperative pain.
What Type of Anaesthesia Is Used?
For knee arthroplasty and hip arthroplasty, general anaesthesia is not required. The anaesthesiologist administers spinal anaesthesia and the patient remains awake.
For shoulder arthroplasty, regional anaesthesia is performed in combination with general anaesthesia. When indicated, Dr Leonidou’s team can also perform shoulder arthroplasty without general anaesthesia.
Recovery and Rehabilitation After Arthroplasty
Recovery depends on the joint involved and the extent of the condition treated. All patients follow an individualised postoperative rehabilitation programme for a safe and rapid return to daily activities.
Patients undergoing hip and knee arthroplasty are able to walk normally a few hours after surgery.
What Is the Cost and Price of the Procedure? How Much Does It Cost?
The cost is quite affordable and depends on the complexity of the patient’s condition and the specialised materials required.
The cost of the procedure includes the arthroplasty implant, hospital stay expenses, and the fee of the surgical team. There is also participation from the patient’s insurance fund (EOPYY). Patients with private insurance are covered according to the terms of their insurance policy.
