WHAT IS SHOULDER ARTHROSCOPY WITH THE PATIENT AWAKE (AWAKE SHOULDER SURGERY)
This service is being offered comprehensively for the first time in Greece by Mr Leonidou in collaboration with his specialized anesthesiologist. A patient who requires shoulder arthroscopy receives regional anesthesia and not general anesthesia or sedation. As a result, the patient feels no pain at all and can watch the procedure (if they wish) on the special monitor in the operating theatre.
WHAT IS REGIONAL ANESTHESIA – HOW IS IT PERFORMED?
The specialized anesthesiologist administers an interscalene block (regional – local anesthesia) under ultrasound guidance. As a result, the arm becomes “numb”, allowing us to perform the arthroscopy without any pain. This regional anesthesia lasts approximately 12–24 hours. The interscalene block is a safe, painless and bloodless method of nerve blockade of the upper limb with exceptionally low complication rates.
WHICH CONDITIONS ARE TREATED WITH THIS METHOD?
All shoulder arthroscopies can be performed using this method. Also – under certain conditions – shoulder arthroplasty can be performed with the patient awake.
