Arthroscopy

What Is Arthroscopy?

Arthroscopy is a safe, painless, and bloodless technique that allows the definitive treatment of conditions affecting the knee, shoulder, and elbow.

How Is Arthroscopy Performed? What Is the Procedure?

Through small skin incisions (4 millimetres), a camera with a cold light source is inserted into the joint. The doctor examines the joint and then proceeds with the appropriate therapeutic procedures.

Is Hospitalisation Required?

Arthroscopy does not require hospitalisation, and most patients are discharged from the hospital a few hours after the procedure.

Is There Pain During Arthroscopy?

The specialised anaesthesiologist administers regional anaesthesia; therefore, there is no postoperative pain.

What Type of Anaesthesia Is Used?

For shoulder and knee arthroscopy, general anaesthesia is not required. The patient remains awake and, if desired, can watch the arthroscopy on a special monitor. Elbow arthroscopy is performed under general anaesthesia combined with a regional nerve block.

What Are the Advantages of Arthroscopy?

  • Improved visibility of the joint

  • Much lower complication rates compared to open procedures

  • Minimal tissue damage and therefore reduced postoperative pain

  • Faster patient recovery

  • Faster return to work and daily activities

  • Excellent cosmetic result

What Is the Recovery Process After Surgery?

Recovery depends on the joint involved and the extent of the condition treated. All patients follow an individualised postoperative rehabilitation programme for a safe and rapid return to daily activities and sports.

What Is the Cost and Price of Arthroscopy?

The cost is quite affordable and depends on the complexity of the patient’s condition and the specialised materials required. The cost of the procedure includes the arthroscopic materials, hospital stay expenses, and the fee of the surgical team.

There is also participation from the patient’s insurance fund (EOPYY). Patients with private insurance are covered according to the terms of their insurance policy.
